🌱 Morphology
Like a vine from another planet where the leaves have turned into small silver coins. Its thin, flexible stems glide and climb, while the rounded, fleshy, greyish-green leaves follow one after another like small metal pieces suspended in the air. It is an extraordinarily unique succulent because it combines the appearance of a xerophytic plant with the architecture of a climbing cucurbit.
It is a climbing or trailing succulent, with thin, branched stems that can reach several meters in length. The leaves are thick, fleshy, rounded to obovate, greyish-green, and have a slightly glaucous surface. It produces tendrils that allow it to attach to nearby vegetation or supports. Specimens grown from seed may eventually develop a thickened base or caudex, while those grown from cuttings generally do not. It is a dioecious species, with separate male and female plants.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A species of the Cucurbitaceae family, the same family to which cucumbers, melons, and pumpkins belong, although Xerosicyos danguyi is an exceptional succulent representative. It is endemic to Madagascar and grows in dry environments and scrublands with a seasonally arid climate.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC, only in completely dry, well-acclimatized specimens and during brief exposures. For safe cultivation, it is advisable to avoid frost and, above all, the combination of low temperatures and damp substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light to maintain compact growth, encourage the formation of thick leaves, and preserve its characteristic greyish-green hue. During active growth, a daily light integral (DLI) of approximately 18–25 mol/m²/day (DLI PAR) is recommended. Direct sun can be used with progressive acclimatization.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. In winter, watering should be considerably reduced, keeping the substrate practically dry when temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
It is a dioecious species: male and female plants produce different flowers. The flowers are small and yellowish; they appear mainly during the warm growth period. To obtain seeds, it is necessary to have plants of both sexes and perform pollination between them.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer specific to succulents is recommended, with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Suculentas, applied once a month when watering.
