€15,90
🌱 Morphology
Generally solitary, slow-growing cactus with a globose to depressed-globose stem, dark green, about 4–6 cm tall and 6–10 cm in diameter, although it can reach a larger size in cultivation. Its most striking feature is the presence of numerous very fine, wavy, and densely packed ribs, usually between 80 and 100, and potentially up to about 120. The areoles are small and woolly. Each one develops several whitish or translucent radial spines and generally 1–3 central spines, which are curved or slightly twisted, with color varying by population. The species shows remarkable morphological variability.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is distributed across different regions of Mexico, from Chihuahua, Coahuila and Durango to Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Jalisco and Zacatecas. It inhabits mainly xerophytic shrublands, grasslands and dry vegetation areas of the Chihuahuan Desert, on rocky terrain and mineral soils. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 8a–11b
It is a continental climate cactus and relatively cold-hardy when kept dry and well acclimated. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −9 ºC for short periods. Hardiness can vary between populations and specimens, so during episodes of intense cold, the combination of low temperatures and humidity must be especially avoided.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires very intense lighting, with an approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Direct sun promotes compact growth, well-developed spines, and abundant flowering. Specimens grown under protection must be progressively acclimated to intense solar radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In winter, it must be kept dry, especially when temperatures are low. Excess humidity during dormancy increases the risk of rot.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small flowers, approximately 2.5 cm, generally white with a purple-violet central line or zone. They appear in the apical area and flowering can occur mainly between January and March in its natural area; in Madrid, with the local cultivation cycle, it may shift towards March–May.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
