🌿 Morphology
Small, globular and flattened cactus, practically spineless, with grayish-green or bluish-green epidermis. It has 5–13 low, rounded ribs, divided into small tubercles. A characteristic woolly areole appears at the center of each apex, from which the flowers emerge. It forms clumps with age and can reach approximately 12 cm in diameter. It develops a thick taproot, which can reach a considerable length relative to the plant's body and acts as a storage organ.

🌎 Distribution and habitat
Family Cactaceae. Native to southern and southwestern Texas and northeastern Mexico, growing in desert areas and dry scrublands, usually on stony, well-drained soils.

❄️ USDA and temperature
USDA approximately 9b–11b. In cultivation, we recommend keeping it above 5–7 °C, dry and with good ventilation during winter. It can tolerate lower temperatures for short periods if the substrate is completely dry, but we do not recommend reproducing these limits in a pot.

☀️ Lighting — DLI
During growth: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR. It prefers a lot of light, but not necessarily the most intense midday sun; in very hot climates, it appreciates some protection during the summer. Progressive acclimatization is important to avoid damage to the epidermis.

💧 Cycle and watering
Growth mainly spring–summer, with winter dormancy. Water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. During winter, keep it practically dry. Its taproot makes it especially susceptible to rot due to excess humidity.

🌸 Flowering
Small flowers, approximately 1–2.5 cm, white to pale pink, appearing at the center of the plant. Flowering occurs mainly from May to September, although in its habitat it can have several peaks related to rainfall. Each flower remains open for only a few days.

🌱 Nutrition
During the growth period, use a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE Cactaceae, at a moderate dose, avoiding fertilization during winter dormancy. In this species, it is especially important not to over-fertilize: its natural growth is very slow.

Cultivated only in mineral substrate, which provides more strength and resistance.

In 2004 in Spain, order SCO 190/2004 of January 28 established a list of plants whose sale to the public was prohibited or restricted due to their toxicity. The order included a total of 197 species and, for safety reasons, their use was restricted to the manufacture of medicines, homeopathic strains, and research. Therefore, the free sale of these plants to the public was prohibited (except for industrial ornamental or cosmetic purposes).

This cactus has always been cultivated in Spain as an ornamental plant by collectors and was never intended to be a medicinal plant. Therefore, in 2004, this collector's cactus for ornamental use was not affected. Although there were certain erroneous interpretations by the public and the media at the time.

But furthermore, this order was annulled by a ruling of the National High Court (Administrative Litigation Division, fourth section) of June 27, 2005, and is therefore not applicable to the medicinal plant market. Although Law 29/2006 subsequently corrected this circumstance in its article 51.2, this new list has NOT been developed to date.
