Coryphantha radians f. bold | Superpectinate-spined biznaga
€15,90
🌱 Morphology
Perfect pectination... A horticultural selection form of Coryphantha radians, especially prized for a much more robust and orderly spination than is typical for the species. The body is globose to slightly cylindrical, matte green, with a depressed and woolly apex. The tubercles, conical and somewhat oblique, are arranged in a spiral and feature a longitudinal groove.
The distinguishing feature of ‘Bold’ is its pectinate radial spines, which are notably thicker, stiffer, and more uniform, arranged with extraordinary regularity on both sides of the areole. Their alignment visually creates a continuous central line or stripe, as if each areole had been combed with a very fine comb. Compared to the usual spination of C. radians, which can be more irregular and interwoven, this selection retains a much more defined and architectural pectinate pattern. It may also present a more robust central spine.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The species is native to central Mexico, where it grows in xerophytic scrub environments and stony, often calcareous soils in areas with a seasonally dry climate. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Cacteae tribe. ‘Bold’ is a horticultural selection form, not a formally published botanical taxon. The species nomenclature follows Joël Lodé, Taxonomy of the Cactaceae (2026), volumes III–VI.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −3 ºC in dry, well-acclimated specimens. It must be kept completely dry during winter.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light and direct sun to maintain the compactness of the body and fully develop the characteristic spination of this selection. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next application. From autumn onwards, watering should be progressively reduced until the plant is kept dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large lemon-yellow flowers, which may have a reddish base and reach approximately 6–7 cm in diameter. They appear around the apex during the warm season.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technical square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
