🌱 Morphology
Ponytail palm. A slow-growing, long-lived caudiciform succulent tree. It develops a highly thickened, globose to conical trunk at the base that acts as an extraordinary water reservoir. In adult specimens, it can reach approximately 2–3 m in diameter, while the aerial part can reach about 9–15 m under natural conditions.
The bark is gray to brownish-gray, initially smoother and later thick, rough, and divided into plates. With age, it develops numerous relatively thick and brittle branches that end in large leaf rosettes.
The leaves are one of its most distinctive features: linear, long, narrow, and recurved, light to medium green in color, smooth, leathery, and with finely denticulate margins. They can reach approximately 90–150 cm in length and 1–2 cm in width, although adult specimens may have even longer leaves.
Unlike a true palm, Beaucarnea recurvata is a monocot in the Asparagaceae family and does not belong to Arecaceae.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asparagaceae. It is native to Mexico, with distribution documented by Kew in Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. It grows mainly in dry scrub and xerophytic vegetation, as well as in tropical deciduous forests, on rocky terrain and well-drained slopes.
The basal thickening is a fundamental adaptation to these seasonally dry environments: it allows for water storage and sustains the plant during long periods with scarce rainfall.
The species also presents significant conservation interest. Kew lists B. recurvata under the IUCN category Critically Endangered (CR). Habitat destruction and fragmentation, along with the extraction of specimens for the ornamental trade, have contributed to the decline of its natural populations.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6.5 ºC, as a reference point for well-established specimens that are kept dry and protected from adverse conditions.
This figure should not be interpreted as a recommended cultivation temperature for potted plants. Young plants and container-grown specimens are more sensitive to cold, especially when the substrate remains damp. In winter, it is recommended to keep the substrate very dry and protect the plant from prolonged frosts. Horticultural references place its hardiness around USDA 9a, while other sources are considerably more conservative.
☀️ Lighting
Indicative DLI PAR: 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
It requires high light levels to maintain compact growth and promote the development of a robust trunk and a balanced canopy. Full sun or a very bright location is recommended, with progressive acclimatization for specimens previously grown under low light.
A lack of light can cause weaker leaves and less compact growth.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
It is a species adapted to seasonally dry climates with a marked dry season. Its caudex allows it to store water and buffer long periods of water scarcity.
During the growing season, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. Although it can tolerate some moisture during active growth, drainage must be excellent and the substrate should never be kept permanently damp.
During the cold months and when vegetative activity decreases, watering should be spaced out considerably. In winter, especially if temperatures are low, it is recommended to keep it very dry, as excess water around the roots can lead to rot.
The basal thickening can maintain good turgor even after prolonged periods without water; a slight loss of volume during a dry phase is a normal physiological response.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering occurs mainly in adult specimens, making it uncommon in young plants grown as houseplants.
It produces a large, erect, and highly branched terminal inflorescence that can reach approximately 70–100 cm in length. The flowers are tiny, about 4 mm in diameter, white to yellowish-white, and are grouped in numerous nodes along the inflorescence branches.
It is a dioecious species: specimens typically produce either male or female flowers, so fruiting requires the presence of plants of both sexes.
In Spain, it may bloom roughly between July and August, although the age of the specimen, temperatures, and cultivation conditions significantly influence the appearance of the inflorescence. The Botanical Garden of the University of Valencia places flowering in July-August.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents fertilizer is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
It is not recommended to fertilize during the dormancy period or when temperatures are low and root activity is reduced.
