🌱 Morphology
Small acaulescent succulent, 10–20 cm tall, forming solitary rosettes or groups via basal offsets. Its lanceolate-triangular, fleshy, and keeled leaves are arranged very characteristically in three ranks (tristichous). They are green, though they can acquire brownish-chocolate tones with drought, and are covered by irregular transverse bands of white spots. The margins and keel have a whitish border with tiny cartilaginous teeth.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It extends from southern Namibia to the South African Free State, including Northern, Western, and Eastern Cape. It inhabits arid and semi-arid areas of the Karoo and Succulent Karoo, generally on clayey, stony soils or between cracks, frequently protected under small shrubs. It belongs to Asphodelaceae.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9a–11b. Although some specimens have withstood lower temperatures in exceptionally dry conditions, for potted cultivation, we recommend keeping it above 3–5 °C, especially if there is humidity. Cold combined with wet substrate is much more dangerous than a temporary drop in temperature.
☀️ Lighting
Very intense light, but it appreciates light partial shade, especially during the hours of highest summer insolation. During active growth, target 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. Too much sun and drought can considerably darken the leaves.
💧 Growth cycle
Opportunistic, with particularly favorable growth during mild temperatures and after rains. In summer, it can enter a phase of very reduced activity and withstand long dry periods. Water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering.
🌸 Flowering
Erect inflorescences about 30 cm tall, usually branched, with loose racemes of hanging flowers ranging from fleshy pink to dull red, rarely yellow. In its habitat, it flowers mainly from July to September; in Madrid, approximately January-March, although the timing can shift depending on temperature and cultivation.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthia & Co., with calcium and potassium. Apply moderately and reduce or suspend during dormancy or very slow growth periods.
