x Mangave 'Silver Fox' | Mangave 'Silver Fox'
€26,50
🌱 Morphology
×Mangave with a compact habit, formed by a dense rosette of short, wide, fleshy, and strongly glaucous leaves. Its most striking feature is the silvery appearance acquired from the thick waxy layer covering the leaves, upon which smoky purple and lavender spots and irregular streaks appear, especially under intense UV radiation. The leaves, arching outwards, feature margins with large, well-defined teeth and a short terminal spine. It reaches approximately 20–25 cm in height and 40–45 cm in diameter.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It has no natural distribution: it is an intergeneric horticultural hybrid of the Asparagaceae family, obtained by Hans A. Hansen at Walters Gardens. The patent documents the cross between ×Mangave ‘Bloodspot’ as the female parent and a selection of Agave gypsophila as the male parent. The latter identification reflects the nomenclature used in 2011; later taxonomic studies separated the populations of Colima under the name Agave pablocarrilloi.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9–11
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to approximately −7 ºC, corresponding to the lower limit of USDA 9, provided the substrate remains dry and the specimen is well established. The patent itself indicates that its full hardiness had not been tested and was only confirmed up to at least USDA 10, so this value should not be interpreted as a guarantee of survival in a pot.
☀️ Lighting
It requires full sun, with more than 6 hours of direct solar radiation. A DLI PAR of 18–30 mol/m²/day is recommended during active growth. High light levels and UV radiation favor the appearance of the purple hues on the silvery background, while in low light, a grayish-green tone may predominate.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During spring and summer, it maintains active growth and appreciates regular watering, allowing the substrate to dry out between applications. Drainage must be excellent, as persistent moisture promotes root and crown rot. In autumn, water supply is progressively reduced, and it is kept practically dry during winter.
🌸 Flowering
When it reaches maturity, it can produce a tall, rigid, and highly branched floral spike that protrudes well above the rosette. The flowers are yellowish. In trials at the Chicago Botanic Garden, ‘Silver Fox’ flowered after approximately two years of cultivation, although the flowering age depends on the conditions and the development reached by each individual specimen.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with high content in potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with watering, avoiding fertilization during winter dormancy.
