🌱 Morphology

Stemless, compact, slow-growing succulent that proliferates from the base and can form clumps over time. It develops a rosette up to about 20 cm in diameter, with fleshy, rigid, triangular, dark green leaves, arranged from erect to spreading. The leaf surface is rough and covered with numerous small white tubercles; the margin has fine teeth and the apex ends in a small point. The leaves can be arranged in two levels, one of the most characteristic ornamental features of this hybrid.

🌍 Distribution, habitat and family

It is an intergeneric horticultural hybrid, so it does not have its own natural distribution. Specialized sources indicate the parents as Gasteria carinata var. verrucosa × Aloe sp., while some attribute the Aloe parent to Aristaloe aristata; as there is no completely established parentage. It belongs to the family Asphodelaceae.

❄️ Temperature / USDA Zone

USDA 9b–11b. Minimum temperature of −1 °C. Although it can withstand occasional drops, it is recommended to protect it from prolonged frosts and, especially, to avoid the combination of cold and wet substrate, which considerably increases the risk of root damage.

☀️ Lighting

The ideal exposure is bright semi-shade, with abundant indirect light. It can tolerate a certain amount of soft sun, but it is recommended to avoid intense sun during the central hours of summer to prevent leaf burn. As a cultivation reference, a PAR DLI of approximately 10–16 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is suitable for maintaining compact growth and good expression of the white tubercles.

💧 Growth cycle and watering

It exhibits slow growth and relative summer dormancy, especially when temperatures are very high. Vegetative activity is usually greater during periods of moderate temperatures, and can slow down considerably during very hot summer and winter.

During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before watering again. During summer dormancy and at low temperatures, the watering frequency should be significantly reduced. The substrate should never be kept permanently wet. DesertSTORE places its indoor watering period approximately between September and June.

🌸 Flowering

It produces a raceme inflorescence with tubular orange flowers. Flowering occurs mainly during spring, although DesertSTORE places the usual flowering period between February and April.

To encourage inflorescence formation, it is recommended to supplement regular nutrition with Desert CHOICE® Flowering during the period prior to flowering.
