Weingartia tarabucoensis subsp. hertusii
🌱 Morphology
Small cactus, globose to slightly depressed, with a greyish-green epidermis. Forms clumps slowly with age. It features low, compact tubercles, small areoles, and numerous thin, short, and very close-set radial spines with a silky appearance, which can acquire yellowish or golden tones. The root is strong and napiform, adapted to stony mountain soils.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Bolivia, in the department of Chuquisaca, especially in the surroundings of Zudáñez, where it grows on slopes and rocky outcrops at an altitude of between approximately 2,200 and 2,950 m. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. In Joël Lodé’s taxonomy, it appears as Weingartia tarabucoensis subsp. hertusii; its historical names include Sulcorebutia crispata subsp. hertusii and Sulcorebutia tarabucoensis subsp. hertusii.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimatized specimens. In winter, it must be kept protected from persistent humidity and prolonged frosts.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and dense spination. Gradual acclimation to intense sun is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Keep practically dry during the winter. With the rise in temperatures and day length, it resumes growth; at that time, deep and infrequent watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Drainage and ventilation are essential.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear laterally, near the base of the stem, and are large in proportion to the body. They can present shades ranging from deep red to magenta, with variations depending on the origin.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
