🌱 Morphology
Small, globose to slightly depressed cactus with a green to grayish-green epidermis, which can form clusters with age. It features well-defined tubercles and small areoles, equipped with numerous fine, short, and curved radial spines ranging from golden yellow to brown, which can vary significantly between populations. The combination of shapes, spination, and coloration explains the epithet polymorpha.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to Bolivia, in the department of Cochabamba, where it grows in dry, stony mountainous environments at altitudes of approximately 2,950 to 3,700 m. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. In Joël Lodé's taxonomy, polymorpha is included in Weingartia steinbachii; the name Weingartia polymorpha and the historical combinations in Rebutia and Sulcorebutia are synonyms.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Low temperatures must coincide with a completely dry substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, gradually increasing exposure to maintain a compact shape and intense spination.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During winter, it is kept dry and with good ventilation. Upon starting spring growth, watering is resumed, preferably abundantly but spaced out, allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again. Its mountain habitat makes it especially important to avoid prolonged moisture in low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
Produces lateral flowers that are relatively large in proportion to the body, generally in intense violet tones, although yellow flowers can also appear depending on the origin. Flowering is concentrated in late spring.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
