🌱 Morphology
Small, globose to slightly depressed cactus with a dark green epidermis, sometimes with purplish tones. It produces numerous offsets and can form small clumps or cushions. It features compact tubercles, elongated areoles, and a dense crown of pectinate radial spines that lie very close to the body, generally whitish, yellowish, pinkish, or brownish depending on the origin. Central spines may be absent. The root is napiform and relatively deep.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to Bolivia, mainly in the Cochabamba department, where it grows in dry, stony mountainous environments at an altitude of around 2,500–2,600 m. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. Joël Lodé lists Sulcorebutia steinbachii subsp. markusii as a synonym, although it is not currently the accepted name.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when dry and in well-acclimated specimens. It should be especially protected from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes a compact plant and dense spination. Gradual acclimation is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during the winter. When growth resumes, water abundantly but infrequently, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Rapid drainage and ventilation are essential.
🌸 Flowering
It produces flowers that are large in relation to the body size, emerging laterally from the basal zone. The colors range from pink to violet and magenta, with variation between populations.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
