Weingartia neocumingii subsp. sucrensis (F.Ritter) Donald
🌱 Morphology
Globose to shortly cylindrical cactus, generally solitary, slow-growing, with a green body up to about 6–10 cm in diameter. It presents 16–18 low, tuberculate ribs, frequently arranged in a spiral. The areoles are small, with sparse wool, and produce 2 to 8 central spines and 5–24 radial spines, yellowish or brownish, about 1 cm long. It can develop a robust root that allows it to withstand dry periods. It is a particularly compact form within the variable W. neocumingii.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It originates from Bolivia, especially from the surroundings of Sucre, in the Chuquisaca department, where populations are known near 2,500–2,950 m altitude. It grows in Andean valleys and slopes that are highly exposed, with strong sunlight, marked thermal amplitude, and a dry season. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. The name Weingartia sucrensis refers precisely to its origin in the Sucre region.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC if kept dry and for well-acclimated specimens. During dormancy, it should be kept completely dry, especially when temperatures are low.
☀️ Lighting
It needs direct sun and very intense lighting to maintain its compact habit, develop good spination, and bloom abundantly. During active growth, an approximate integral of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR is recommended, with progressive acclimatization.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Keep dry during the winter. At the beginning of spring, resume watering abundantly but spaced out, letting the substrate dry completely between applications. During active growth, it can be watered more regularly, always with fast drainage and good ventilation. A cold, dry winter encourages flowering.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear on the upper part of the stem and can even emerge very close to the apex, an unusual characteristic among rebutias. They are approximately 2–2.5 cm in diameter, generally bright yellow, although there is variation toward orange tones. Flowering is concentrated at the beginning of summer and can repeat during the season.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
