🌱 Morphology
Small, globose to slightly depressed cactus with a dark green epidermis. It can produce offsets and form small clusters. It features compact tubercles and narrow areoles, with numerous fine, short, radial spines held very close to the body, forming a dense and orderly spine pattern. The spines can be whitish, yellowish, or brownish, depending on the specimen.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to Bolivia, within the dry Andean valleys of Cochabamba, where it grows in rocky, well-drained terrain at high altitudes. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Cold exposure must coincide with a completely dry substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sunlight. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and dense spination. Progressive acclimatization is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during winter. With the return of spring, resume watering—abundant but spaced out—letting the substrate dry out completely between waterings. Rapid drainage and ventilation are essential.
🌸 Flowering
Produces lateral flowers, relatively large in relation to the body, in shades of intense red, dark red, and magenta, which stand out against the green epidermis and dense spination. Flowering is mainly concentrated in spring.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high levels of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
