🌱 Morphology
Miniature cactus, globose to slightly depressed, with a dark green epidermis that can form small clusters with age. It features low, compact tubercles, narrow areoles, and a very characteristic spination, with numerous fine, short, pectinate radial spines that are generally appressed to the body and range in color from whitish to yellowish. Together, they create a plant densely covered in spines, with a very orderly appearance.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to Bolivia, in the department of Cochabamba, within the dry Andean valleys, at approximately 2,500 to 3,000 m altitude. It grows in rocky, well-drained terrain. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. In Joël Lodé’s taxonomy, Weingartia kruegerae is the accepted name; Rebutia, Aylostera and Sulcorebutia kruegerae, as well as Weingartia steinbachii subsp. kruegerae, are historical combinations.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. The cold must coincide with a completely dry substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and dense spination. Gradual acclimatization is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during the winter. With the arrival of spring, resume watering—generous but infrequent—allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Rapid drainage and ventilation are essential.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear laterally, near the base of the stem. In this form, they can appear in shades of red, orange-red, or yellowish, although there is variability within the W. steinbachii complex. The spring flowering contrasts sharply with the light-colored spination.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technical square pot with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
