🌱 Morphology
Small, globose to slightly depressed cactus with a light green to grayish-green epidermis. It may remain solitary or form compact clusters with age. It features small, very close-set tubercles, narrow areoles, and fine, pectinate spines, with numerous whitish to yellowish radial spines, generally appressed to the body. The combination of a light-colored body, pectinate spines, and yellow flowers is especially characteristic of this form.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Bolivia, Chuquisaca Department, in the Cerro Colata area, between Mojocoya and the Rio Grande, at an altitude of around 2,750–2,800 m. It grows on rocky slopes and grassland areas with abundant rock. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. Joël Lodé recognizes it as Weingartia gemmae subsp. elizabethae; its basionym is Sulcorebutia elizabethae J. de Vries.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. The combination of intense cold and humidity should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a PAR DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and dense spination. Gradual acclimatization is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during the winter. With the return of spring, resume watering, making it abundant but spaced out, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Rapid drainage and ventilation are essential.
🌸 Flowering
Produces lateral, bright yellow flowers, relatively large in relation to its small body. The Cerro Colata populations are known precisely for their yellow flowers, which contrast with the light green epidermis and pectinate spination.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
