🌱 Morphology
Miniature cactus with a globose to very depressed body, which usually produces abundant offsets and forms compact clumps. The stems can reach about 2 cm in diameter, exceptionally up to 4 cm. It features small tubercles with elongated areoles and fine, dense spination, with white, yellowish, or brownish radial spines, often with reddish bases. It develops a very long, branched taproot that can reach about 10 cm.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to the Chuquisaca department, Bolivia, in the surroundings of Azurduy, at approximately 2,460 to 3,150 m altitude. It grows mostly in relatively humid places, among grasslands and soils with organic matter, a habitat unusual among Bolivian cacti. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. The name Weingartia azurduyensis comes from the town of Azurduy.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when dry and with well-acclimatized specimens. Although it comes from mountainous areas, the combination of low temperatures and damp substrate should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and dense spination. Gradual acclimatization is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Keep dry during winter. When active growth begins, resume watering, preferably abundant and spaced out, allowing the substrate to dry completely between waterings. Its long tuberous root requires a very well-draining and airy substrate.
🌸 Flowering
Spectacular in relation to its tiny size. The flowers, 25–35 mm long and up to about 35 mm in diameter, arise from the lower part of the stem. They present yellow, orange, and reddish tones, with a characteristic dark central nerve; in cultivation, they can reach larger diameters.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
