🌱 Morphology
An especially striking version of the pearl plant, selected for the spectacular texture of its leaves. It forms a compact, very slow-growing rosette with thick, rigid, triangular, and slightly incurved grayish-green leaves. Standing out on them are very large, raised, and irregular white tubercles, which can be arranged in rows and cover a large part of the leaf surface. The result is a plant with a robust and extraordinarily tactile appearance, in which the leaf texture is its main ornamental appeal. The rosettes can reach about 7–8 cm in diameter.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
‘Emperor’ is a cultivar of unknown horticultural origin, so it should not be attributed to a specific natural locality. Its reference species, Tulista pumila, is endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, with its main distribution area between Worcester, Robertson, Ashton, Bonnievale, Montagu, and towards Matjiesfontein. It lives in Karoo environments and open shrubland areas, within a region of predominantly winter rainfall. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family, Asphodeloideae subfamily.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 10a. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −2 ºC. In pot cultivation, it is recommended to avoid prolonged exposure to cold, especially when the substrate remains moist. The species withstands light frosts in its natural habitat.
☀️ Lighting
Partial shade. It requires plenty of light to keep the rosette compact and achieve good tubercle expression. Intense light is recommended, with progressive adaptation to direct sun and protection during the hours of greatest radiation in summer. DLI PAR: 12–20 mol/m²/day during active growth.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Tulista pumila comes from a region of predominantly winter rainfall: the first rains usually arrive in autumn and the greatest water availability is concentrated during the cool months. Summer is hot and dry, so the plant reduces its activity. It is recommended to water during the active period, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings, and to space out waterings significantly during the summer.
🌸 Flowering
The flowering is typical of Tulista pumila: a slender inflorescence up to about 40 cm tall, with small, waxy, brownish-white flowers with greenish or brownish hues. They appear mainly in early summer. When grown from seed, the species normally reaches floral maturity at around 5 years, although this data is not specifically established for the ‘Emperor’ cultivar.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
