š¦ Morphology
A Tulista pumila selection with a compact and extraordinarily sculptural appearance. It forms a rosette of thick, rigid, triangular leaves, ranging from grayish-green to olive green, with a surface marked by the species' characteristic raised white tubercles. In its texture and robust appearance, the whole plant is reminiscent of a small prehistoric creature, hence the trade name āDinosaurā. As with the species, it is a very slow-growing, practically stemless, and long-lived plant that can remain solitary for many years.
š Distribution, habitat, and family
āDinosaurā is a cultivar of undocumented horticultural origin; therefore, it should not be assigned a specific natural locality. Its species, Tulista pumila, is endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, with its center of distribution in the Worcester-Robertson Karoo and the Breede Valley, extending northeast to Laingsburg. It lives in open Karoo environments and xerophytic scrub, within a region of predominantly winter rainfall. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family, subfamily Asphodeloideae.
āļø Temperature
USDA 10a. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to ā2 ĀŗC. When potted, it is recommended to avoid the combination of low temperatures and damp substrate for prolonged periods.
āļø Lighting
Partial shade. It requires intense lighting to maintain a compact rosette and good expression of the tubercles. A very bright exposure is recommended, with progressive adaptation to direct sun. DLI PAR: 12ā20 mol/m²/day during active growth.
š§ Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Tulista pumila is a primarily winter-growing succulent: autumn rains trigger growth, and the greatest water availability is concentrated during the cool months, while summer is warmer and drier. It is recommended to water during the active period, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings, and to significantly space out watering during the summer.
šø Flowering
The flowering is that typical of Tulista pumila: a thin, elevated inflorescence, up to about 40 cm tall, with small, tubular, pinkish-white flowers with greenish or brownish hues. Flowering occurs mainly between November and December, during the austral summer. The species can reach floral maturity at approximately 5 years of age, although there is no specific published data for āDinosaurā.
šæ Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICEĀ® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
