Tulista ‘David Grigsby’
🌱 Morphology
A hybrid of Tulista pumila ♀ × Tulista marginata ♂, initially considered a possible natural hybrid. The original material was received by David Grigsby in 1970, originating from the Robertson district in the South African Western Cape. It forms a large, acaulescent rosette, up to about 25 cm in diameter, combining the robust habit of T. pumila with the more open structure of T. marginata. The upper leaf surface has few spots, while the underside develops numerous rounded white tubercles, especially marked along the keel and margins, where they form characteristic rows. It propagates mainly through offsets.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a horticultural hybrid of South African origin, although the original material comes from the surroundings of Robertson, Western Cape, where the ranges of T. pumila and T. marginata are found within the winter rainfall region. It belongs to Asphodelaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae. The parents are endemic to southwestern South Africa.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frosts and, especially, from the combination of intense cold and moist substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Partial shade. It needs plenty of light to maintain a compact rosette and promote the contrast of the white tubercles. Lighting of 12–20 mol/m²/day DLI PAR is recommended during active growth, with progressive adaptation to direct sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Both of its parents come from areas of the Western Cape with predominantly winter rains. Most activity occurs from autumn to spring. It is recommended to water thoroughly when the substrate is completely dry during the active period and to space out waterings significantly in summer, keeping it almost dry at very high temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a tall inflorescence with whitish tubular flowers, characteristic of the genus. Flowering usually occurs in late spring and early austral summer. There is no reliable data on the specific age of first flowering for this clone.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
