ā¬7,95
š± Morphology
Globose to slightly depressed cactus, which usually forms compact clusters with age. The green stems reach approximately 16 cm in diameter and feature about 11 broad, prominent ribs. The areoles are whitish and provided with 5ā15 flexible, needle-like, yellow spines that can reach 2.5 cm in length. Its relatively compact appearance contrasts with its large flowers, which are disproportionately striking in relation to the size of the body.
š Distribution, habitat and family
Species endemic to the province of Salta, in northwestern Argentina, especially in the Quebrada de Escoipe, where it grows at approximately 2,000 to 2,500 m altitude in dry, mountainous environments. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. The name used follows the classification by JoĆ«l LodĆ© in Taxonomy of the Cactaceae, volumes IIIāVI, 2026. Among its historical names are Lobivia walteri, Trichocereus walteri and Echinopsis walteri.
āļø Temperature Ā· USDA Zone 8bā11b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to ā9 ĀŗC in dry and well-acclimated specimens. Cold resistance increases when the substrate remains completely dry during the winter.
āļø Lighting
Needs a very bright exposure, preferably in full sun. Intense lighting favors compact growth and abundant flowering. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20ā30 molĀ·mā»Ā²Ā·dayā»Ā¹ is recommended.
š§ Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During spring and summer, active growth occurs and it is recommended to water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. In autumn, water supply is progressively reduced until it is kept dry during the winter.
šø Flowering
Its main attraction is its large yellow, bell-shaped and slightly fragrant flowers, which can reach about 7.5ā9 cm in both length and diameter. They appear on the young areoles near the apex and open during the day. Flowering can occur in succession during the warm season. The fruits are globose, yellowish-green, about 2 cm.
šæ Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high assimilable calcium content and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® CactÔceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
