🔍 Morphology:
Herbaceous tuberous plant that develops an underground storage tuber from which seasonal stems sprout. Its dark olive-green leaves, sometimes with reddish tints on the underside, can be asymmetrical and appear in unequal pairs. The combination of foliage and orange tubular flowers gives it a very distinctive appearance. Unlike woody caudiciforms, its storage organ is an underground tuber.
📍 Distribution, habitat and family: It is native to southeast Brazil, especially the states of São Paulo and Paraná. It grows on rocky outcrops in wooded areas, often on calcareous substrates and in places with some ambient humidity.
It belongs to the Gesneriaceae family. Its synonyms include Rechsteineria calcaria and Corytholoma calcarium.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 11a. Tolerates minimum temperatures close to +5 ºC as a safe cultivation reference. It should be protected from prolonged cold and prevented from keeping the tuber damp at low temperatures.
☀️ Lighting: Prefers abundant light, filtered light or bright partial shade. It can receive gentle sun if gradually acclimated, but must be protected from intense radiation and excessive heat. As a cultivation reference, a PAR DLI of approximately 10–15 moles of photons per day is recommended.
🌸 Flowering: Produces tubular flowers in orange to reddish-orange, clustered near the ends of the stems. The shape and intensity of the color can vary between specimens. In cultivation, it can flower from late winter through spring, although the timing depends on when the tuber is reactivated.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Seasonal winter dormancy. Growth begins when the tuber produces new shoots. During this phase, it is recommended to keep the substrate slightly moist, allowing it to drain well and avoiding waterlogging. When the stems die back and the plant enters dormancy, watering is significantly reduced. The tuber should not be kept continuously wet, as it may rot.
🚀 Nutrition: During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents NPK (Ca-Mg) 3-1-5 (4-1) is recommended, applied in moderation and avoiding excess nitrogen.
