🌿 Morphology
Perennial succulent with a branched habit that forms compact rosettes on stems that can elongate over time and become partially trailing. The leaves are fleshy, elongated, and slightly oval, with a convex cross-section and a rounded apex ending in a small mucron.
The usual coloration is light green to grayish-green, but with high light and cool temperatures, the leaves develop pinkish, reddish, and orange hues, especially at the tips. The plant branches easily and can form dense clusters. The rosettes can reach approximately 5–7 cm in diameter.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family: Crassulaceae.
‘Shangri La’ is a cultivar/hybrid of horticultural origin, not a wild species with its own natural distribution. Its nomenclature is somewhat irregular: it is sold as Sedum ‘Shangri La’, while numerous specialized sources treat it as ×Sedeveria ‘Shangri-La’. Its exact parentage is not sufficiently documented; it has been suggested that Sedum clavatum and various Echeveria taxa are involved, but these identifications should not be considered confirmed.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone: 9a–11b
It tolerates relatively low temperatures if kept dry and with good ventilation (down to -4°C), but its actual resistance depends heavily on the clone and growing conditions. Low temperatures, combined with high light, also promote the appearance of its characteristic pink and red tones.
One must especially avoid the combination of frost + damp substrate, which significantly increases the risk of damage to roots and tissues.
☀️ Lighting
Guideline DLI PAR: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
Very high light is recommended, preferably direct sun or very intense filtered light, performing a progressive adaptation when the plant comes from lower light conditions.
Insufficient light causes longer stems, less compact rosettes, and a predominantly green coloration. Conversely, the combination of high radiation and cool temperatures intensifies the pink, red, and orange tones characteristic of the cultivar.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It shows the most activity during seasons with moderate temperatures, especially spring and autumn. During the summer, it may slow down when temperatures are very high, while the cold winter also reduces its growth.
During the active period, it is recommended to provide abundant watering, then allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again. During periods of extreme heat or intense cold, the frequency should be significantly reduced, avoiding prolonged moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small white flowers, grouped in branched inflorescences that appear above the rosettes.
Flowering usually occurs during growing periods, especially spring, although it can vary depending on growing conditions and the clone.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth periods, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied moderately and avoiding excess nitrogen that favors excessively long stems and soft tissues.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
