🌱 Morphology
Perennial, rhizomatous, acaulescent succulent plant, slow-growing, forming compact groups of rosettes. The leaves emerge directly from the short shoots of the rhizome and are arranged in a fan shape, arching gently outward. It can reach approximately 30–50 cm in height and a similar width in well-developed specimens.
The leaves are narrow, elongated, rigid, and lanceolate, with an acute tip. They feature a characteristic very pale green, silvery, or grayish-green coloration, crossed by transverse bands and spots of darker green. The combination of the light background with the irregular pattern creates the silvery appearance that gives the cultivar its name.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asparagaceae. ‘Silver Nymph’ is a cultivar of horticultural origin, so it does not have a natural distribution of its own. In literature and trade, it is still widely found under the name Sansevieria ‘Silver Nymph’, currently moved to the genus Dracaena.
Its morphology corresponds to the group of rhizomatous Dracaena formerly treated as Sansevieria, plants adapted to warm environments with periods of drought, capable of storing water in their leaves and underground structures.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–12b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC occasionally and with the substrate completely dry, although for safe cultivation it is recommended to keep it above 8–10 ºC.
Cold combined with excess humidity is the main risk factor. During winter, watering should be reduced considerably and any accumulation of water in the rhizome must be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
Guideline DLI PAR: 10–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
Partial shade. It adapts to different light levels, but abundant, indirect light or several hours of gentle sun favor compact growth and help better preserve the silvery tone and the leaf pattern. Intense direct sun should be introduced gradually.
With insufficient lighting, it may grow more slowly and develop greener, less compact leaves.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its growth is concentrated mainly during warm periods and decreases notably when temperatures drop.
During the active period, it is recommended to perform abundant watering and let the substrate dry completely before watering again. Its leaves and rhizomes store water, so it tolerates drought better than excess humidity.
In autumn, waterings should be spaced out gradually, and during winter, the substrate should be kept practically dry, especially if the temperature drops.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering is occasional in cultivation. When it occurs, a floral stem emerges from the base of the rosette with small, whitish or greenish flowers, generally grouped along the inflorescence. The flowers can emit a noticeable fragrance, especially at night.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
