🔍 Morphology
Climbing caudiciform plant from the Apocynaceae family, highly prized for its color contrast and tuberosous root. Climbing stems grow from the swollen, nodular underground organ and can reach several meters in height. Its opposite, oval to heart-shaped leaves are leathery and glossy, with very pronounced veins; the undersides and petioles show purple hues. The flowers are small, cream, pale yellow, or greenish, with purple markings that guide pollinators.
📍 Distribution and habitat
Endemic species to South Africa, found in the provinces of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. It grows in humid subtropical environments, from riparian forests to vegetated sandstone cliffs. Unlike many caudiciforms from desert areas, it comes from habitats with higher ambient humidity.
Apocynaceae family. It is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the Red List of Plants of South Africa.
🌡️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10b Tolerates minimum temperatures close to 4–5 °C, provided it is protected from frost and cold, waterlogged substrate. This threshold is indicative, as there is little reliable data on its exact cold resistance.
☀️ Lighting
Prefers abundant indirect light or bright partial shade. It can receive gentle sun, but it is advisable to avoid intense exposure during the hottest hours. Good lighting promotes growth and the purple contrast of the foliage.
🌸 Flowering
Produces small flowers clustered in axillary inflorescences, in shades of cream, pale yellow, or light green, with purple markings on the inside. In its South African habitat, it flowers mainly during the southern spring and summer, approximately from September to December.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Seasonal growth, conditioned by temperature and humidity. During active growth, water regularly and allow the substrate to dry out partially before watering again. Reduce watering in low temperatures, without keeping the tuberosous root constantly moist. It needs an airy substrate with excellent drainage, but it should not be treated like a desert cactus: it appreciates slightly more humid and protected growing conditions.
🚀 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied in moderation during watering. Bioavailable calcium contributes to tissue firmness and potassium promotes water balance; it is advisable to avoid excess nitrogen that promotes overly tender stems.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
Gourmet black pot measuring 12 × 12 cm.
