🌱 Morphology
An upright Opuntia cultivar with flattened, fleshy segments with an oval to obovate outline, deep green in color. The areoles are regularly distributed over both sides and feature glochids and long, thin, yellowish spines that contrast with the green epidermis. New segments appear in a terminal position, and over time, the plant can form a branched and relatively vertical structure. Its appearance is particularly attractive due to the contrast between the green surface of the cladodes and its light-colored spines.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
This is a cultivar of horticultural origin, currently marketed as Opuntia ‘Green shadows’, without reliable documentation allowing it to be assigned to a specific species. Therefore, no specific natural distribution is attributed to it. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Opuntioideae subfamily, and Opuntieae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a–11b
Cultivated in dry conditions with good sun exposure, it shows appreciable cold tolerance; however, since its specific lineage is not documented, it is recommended to avoid prolonged temperatures below freezing, especially when the substrate is damp. Actual resistance may vary depending on the clone and the degree of acclimatization.
☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun to maintain compact growth, an intensely green epidermis, and well-developed spines. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. During the cold months, metabolic activity is significantly reduced, and irrigation should be suspended or limited to exceptional applications when conditions are completely dry. With the increase in temperature and light, irrigation is progressively resumed, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. In summer, it tolerates drought periods well, provided the root system is properly aerated.
🌸 Flowering
Like other Opuntia, it can produce large, showy flowers on mature segments during the warm season. Flowering depends on the age, size of the specimen, sun exposure, and growing conditions. As it is a cultivar of undocumented parentage, no specific floral color is assigned without observing the clone.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
