🌱 Morphology
Solitary cactus with a globose to obconical body that can elongate with age to take on a columnar habit. It reaches approximately 10 cm in height and 6 cm in diameter. It presents up to 30 vertical ribs, divided into small prominent tubercles, with woolly areoles when young. It develops up to 15 fine, interlaced, and appressed radial spines, and 1–4 central ones that are soft and slightly curved. Their coloration varies from chestnut red to very dark brown or almost black, creating a particularly attractive contrast against the deep green body.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Native to Uruguay, especially the departments of Rivera and Tacuarembó, in rocky environments where it grows among lichens, mosses, ferns, and grasses, occupying crevices with accumulations of mineral and organic matter. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Notocacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −5 ºC when dry, in well-acclimated specimens protected from winter humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Growth is concentrated in spring and summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly but infrequently, allowing the substrate to dry out completely. In winter, it should be kept practically dry and with good ventilation.
🌸 Flowering
It produces yellow flowers, up to about 5–5.5 cm in diameter, with lanceolate petals in lemon yellow tones and delicate pink shades at the edges. The throat can take on an intense orange hue; the style is yellow and the stigma red. The flowers appear in a crown around the apex.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
