🌱 Morphology
Brazil... Generally solitary cactus, although it may branch with age, columnar in habit with a rounded apex. It can reach 30–50 cm in height and about 10 cm in diameter. It features around 30–35 low, vertical, and slightly tuberculate ribs, with small circular areoles covered in white wool. Each areole can produce up to 40 radial spines, thin, short, flexible, and interlaced, silvery-white or yellowish in color, forming a delicate covering around the stem. Usually, 1–4 central spines stand out among them, which are more robust, straight, and up to 1 cm long, ranging from yellow, reddish, reddish-brown, or even very dark.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is mainly distributed throughout Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, and Uruguay, in open subtropical environments, especially on rocky terrain and outcrops within grasslands. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Notocacteae tribe. Populations show notable variability in the number, color, and arrangement of the spines.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC in dry conditions and with well-acclimated specimens. During winter, it is recommended to keep it dry and protected from the combination of low temperatures and persistent humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires intense lighting to maintain compact growth and develop its characteristic silvery spine covering. It can be grown in full sun after progressive acclimation. As a general guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the cold months, watering is significantly reduced and the substrate is kept dry. As temperatures rise, watering is gradually resumed. During active growth, it can be watered abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Drainage must be fast and ventilation high.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear forming a striking ring around the apical zone. They are diurnal, silky, and approximately 3.5–4.5 cm in diameter, with petals ranging from lemon yellow to bright yellow. The floral center stands out for its numerous yellow stamens and, especially, for the intense crimson red stigma, which contrasts with the corolla.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
