🌱 Morphology
A Uruguayan... Generally solitary cactus, with a globose to obconical body that later becomes short-cylindrical. Intense green in color, it can reach about 20 cm in height and 11–12 cm in diameter. It has about 22 ribs, with small tubercles or protrusions between the areoles. The areoles, initially white and woolly, become grayish with age. It develops about 34 fine, straight, whitish radial spines, while the 4 central spines are arranged in a cross, are rigid, and are reddish-brown to orange, with darker bases.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to Uruguay, especially around Garzón, in the department of Maldonado, where it grows in sandy grasslands and stony terrain. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, subfamily Cactoideae, tribe Notocacteae.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC when dry and well-acclimatized, although during winter, the combination of cold and damp substrate should be especially avoided.
☀️ Lighting
It needs intense light, with progressively adapted direct sunlight. In places with very hot summers, it may appreciate protection from the most intense midday sun. As a guide during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In winter, it should be kept practically dry, especially at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large flowers, up to about 5 cm in diameter and 4.5 cm in length, intense lemon yellow with a characteristic dark red stigma. They appear around the apex, forming a crown, and usually develop during the spring.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
