🌱 Morphology
A collector's form of Notocactus ottonis, with a globose, depressed body, bright green to bluish-green, which can reach approximately 5–15 cm in diameter and produce offsets with age, forming small clusters. It features 9–16 rounded or somewhat angular ribs, with relatively spaced areoles. The radial spines are thin, numerous, and generally yellowish, while the central spines, up to 4, are more robust and acquire reddish, reddish-brown, or ruby tones, a trait that gives this selection its name. With good lighting, the contrast between the green epidermis and the reddish spines is particularly marked.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The reference species has a wide distribution across southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, where it grows in grasslands, open scrubland, and stony terrain, from low-lying areas to higher altitudes. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Notocacteae tribe. The name ‘Rubrispinus’ refers to a collector's form and not an independent geographical population.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC in dry conditions and with well-acclimatized specimens. During winter, it is recommended to keep the substrate dry and especially avoid the combination of cold and moisture.
☀️ Lighting
It requires intense lighting to maintain compact growth and develop the characteristic reddish coloration of the spines. It can be grown in full sun after progressive acclimatization. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the cold months, watering is significantly reduced and the substrate is kept dry. In spring, with rising temperatures, watering is resumed progressively. During active growth, it can be watered abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear near the apex and reach approximately 4–6 cm in diameter. They are a luminous sulfur yellow to golden yellow, with a satiny appearance. The floral tube features wool and small brown bristles, while the intense purple-red stigma creates a spectacular contrast with the yellow petals.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high assimilable calcium content and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
