€60,00
🔍 Morphology
A climbing caudiciform plant that develops a woody, partially buried caudex covered with a thick corky bark with angular protuberances. Herbaceous stems that can reach several meters and deciduous, fleshy, heart-shaped to almost round leaves grow from it. Its flowers, with a very unique appearance, have five lobes and burgundy, purple-brown or, in some forms, green tones.
📍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is native to Mexico, where it grows in thorny scrublands and tropical deciduous forests with a dry season. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family, subfamily Asclepiadoideae. It is commonly marketed under its synonym Matelea cyclophylla.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 10b. It tolerates minimum temperatures close to +2 ºC only as a guideline; it must be protected from frost and prolonged cold.
☀️ Lighting: It prefers abundant, filtered light or bright partial shade. Intense lighting, adapted gradually, is recommended, avoiding scorching sun and overheating of the caudex. As a cultivation reference, an approximate DLI PAR of 15–20 moles of photons per day can be sought.
🌸 Flowering
It produces fleshy flowers measuring about 2.5–5 cm, generally burgundy or dark purple, with a very striking central crown. Some plants have greenish flowers. They can give off an unpleasant odor that helps attract pollinating flies. Flowering usually coincides with the warm growing season.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Seasonal dormancy in winter. It is a deciduous plant that resumes growth with the arrival of warm and humid conditions. During the production of leaves and stems, it is recommended to water when the substrate is dry; when it yellows and loses its leaves, drastically reduce watering and keep the caudex almost dry during dormancy.
🚀 Nutrition: During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents NPK (Ca-Mg) 3-1-5 (4-1) is recommended, with assimilable potassium and calcium, avoiding excess nitrogen.
