🌱 Morphology
×Mangave with an extraordinarily compact habit and a very unique architecture. It forms an initially rounded rosette that, upon maturing, takes on a characteristic pear-shaped or teardrop silhouette. Its numerous lanceolate leaves are dark olive green, slightly glaucous, and rise from the base to curve toward the center, remaining strongly upright. The margins feature a thin wine-colored line and small reddish spots, while each leaf ends in a large, rigid, cinnamon-wine colored mucro. The apices converge toward each other in the center of the rosette, evoking two hands with fingers pressed together. It reaches approximately 20–25 cm in height and width.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It has no natural distribution: it is an intergeneric horticultural hybrid of Asphodelaceae, resulting from a cross made by Hans A. Hansen in 2014 between ×Mangave ‘Bloodspot’, as the female parent, and a selection of Agave ocahui identified as PDN #7, as the male parent. The patent describes the hybrid as Manfreda × Agave.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9–11
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to approximately −5 ºC in dry conditions. Commercial sources place it in USDA 9–11 and recommend protecting it from frost and winter humidity. When potted, it is advisable to provide extra protection when temperatures approach 0 ºC.
☀️ Lighting
It requires full sun to develop a compact rosette and maintain the intensity of its shades. A DLI PAR of 18–30 mol/m²/day is recommended during active growth. Intense lighting also promotes the expression of reddish hues on the margins and apices.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. During spring and summer, it maintains active growth and appreciates deep but spaced watering, allowing the substrate to dry out before watering again. Although it tolerates water better than some other ×Mangave, it requires excellent drainage. In autumn, watering is gradually reduced, and it is kept very dry during the winter, especially at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
Like other ×Mangave, it can produce an elevated flower spike when it reaches maturity. ×Mangave are relatively slow-flowering plants and need prolonged periods of long days and high light to induce it. After flowering, the main rosette may complete its cycle, while vegetative propagation allows the cultivar to be preserved.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, avoiding fertilization during winter dormancy.
