x Mangave ‘Pineapple Express’ | Mangave ‘Pineapple Express’
€37,10
🌱 Morphology
Compact and highly architectural hybrid, with a dense, pointed rosette reminiscent of a pineapple crown. The long, narrow, and rigid leaves are dark green to grayish-green and feature numerous burgundy spots that intensify with exposure to UV radiation. A fine waxy layer provides a characteristic mint-green hue to the surface. The margins are equipped with small teeth, and each leaf ends in a sharp, cinnamon-colored terminal spine. It reaches approximately 23–25 cm in height and 40–45 cm in diameter.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It has no natural distribution: it is an intergeneric horticultural hybrid of Asphodelaceae, obtained by crossing ×Mangave ‘Jaguar’ × ×Mangave ‘Bloodspot’ by Hans Hansen at Walters Gardens. The cross was made in 2011 and the selection was subsequently introduced as ‘Pineapple Express’. ×Mangave brings together characteristics of Manfreda and Agave, combining the relatively fast growth and leaf patterns of Manfreda with the rosette architecture of Agave.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 8a–10
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −12 ºC in conditions corresponding to USDA 8, although for specimens grown in pots it is wiser to protect them from intense frost, especially when combined with humidity. Some cultivation sources place its practical resistance around −6 ºC, so drainage and winter dryness are decisive.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with high light intensity. A DLI PAR of 18–30 mol/m²/day is recommended during active growth. UV radiation favors a much more intense expression of the burgundy spots, so insufficient lighting can significantly reduce their contrast.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During spring and summer, it maintains active growth and appreciates regular watering, but always after the substrate has dried out. Drainage must be excellent. In winter, it is kept practically dry, reducing watering to a minimum to avoid rot problems.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a tall, rigid, and slightly branched floral stalk with purple tones. The flowers are greenish and produce nectar, making them attractive to pollinators. As with other ×Mangave hybrids, flowering occurs when the plant reaches sufficient maturity.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, formulated for plants of the Asphodelaceae family, with high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, avoiding fertilization during winter dormancy.
