🌵 Morphology
Cylindrical cactus, generally solitary although it may branch with age, reaching up to about 15 cm in height and 3.5–4.5 cm in diameter. The tubercles are conical, green, with axils provided with wool. The areoles produce a dense crown of spines: about 50 per areole, with up to 8 reddish central spines, longer and more prominent, surrounded by numerous yellowish radial spines. This combination of red and yellow spines gives the plant a very characteristic appearance.
🌎 Distribution and habitat
Species endemic to Mexico, with a native range extending from Guanajuato to Hidalgo. It is found in dry areas and xerophilous scrubland, especially in the Sierra del Zamorano, where it grows at approximately 2,000 to 2,500 m altitude, associated with oak forests (Quercus). It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Cacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC for short periods, provided the substrate remains completely dry. Due to its origin in mountainous areas, it can withstand low temperatures, but must be protected from winter humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun is recommended, with high availability of photosynthetically active radiation (DLI PAR of 20–30 mol/m²/day). Intense lighting helps maintain compact growth and encourages the reddish coloration of the spines. Indoors, it needs a very bright location and several hours of direct sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In autumn, water supply is gradually reduced, and it is kept dry during the winter. The substrate must be highly draining and remain completely dry during cold periods.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small flowers, approximately 12–16 mm long, funnel-shaped and ranging in color from greenish-yellow to purple-pink. They appear around the top of the stem, forming a crown. The fruits are small and whitish, yellowish, or pinkish in color. No sufficiently reliable data on the age of the first flowering has been found, so no figure is indicated.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and maintains turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
