🌱 Morphology
Globose to shortly cylindrical cactus, generally solitary although it may branch with age, light green to glaucous in color and up to about 10–15 cm in height and 10–15 cm in diameter. The tubercles are conical-pyramidal, with axils that may present trichomes or small bristles. It develops 14–30 fine, white, radiating radial spines, and between 0 and 4 central spines, usually 2, longer and more rigid, white, brown, or almost black at the apex. The combination of white spines and dark central spines gives it a very characteristic appearance.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Species endemic to Mexico, with a wide distribution from Guanajuato to Veracruz and Oaxaca. It lives between approximately 800 and 2600 m in xerophilous scrub, Quercus forest, and tropical deciduous forest, on both basaltic and limestone rocks. It exhibits notable morphological variability, which is why numerous varieties and subspecies have historically been described.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun or very intense light is recommended, with an approximate DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant lighting promotes a compact habit and dense spination.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, watering should be progressively reduced until it is kept dry during the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small pink, crimson, or purple flowers, approximately 0.8–2 cm, which form a crown around the top of the stem. In the studied populations of central Mexico, flowering has been recorded mainly between January and May, although it may vary according to population and cultivation conditions. It is a profusely flowering species.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
