Mammillaria ernestii Fittkau f. cristata · Golden Brain Cactus · Golden Crest
🌱 Morphology
An extraordinary crested form of Mammillaria ernestii, characterized by the transformation of the point-growth apex into a line that produces a wavy, sinuous, fan-shaped crest. Instead of the globose stem that can become cylindrical with age, it develops irregular masses of intense green tissue, densely covered in tubercles and whitish or silvery spines. Each specimen develops a different architecture, with folds and undulations that may resemble a brain or a living sculpture. The crested form is normally maintained through vegetative propagation, as the mutation is not reliably transmitted by seed.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The cristata form is primarily a cultivated selection and does not have a natural distribution of its own. Its reference botanical form, Mammillaria ernestii, is native to Mexico, in the State of Mexico, where it appears in dry environments and xerophilous scrublands. Taxonomically, M. ernestii is currently considered a synonym of Mammillaria backebergiana subsp. ernestii, restricted to the surroundings of Tonatico.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. For the crested form, it is especially recommended to avoid the combination of cold and prolonged humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun or very intense lighting is recommended, with an approximate DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant radiation helps keep the crest compact and promotes the formation of dense, well-colored spination.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, watering should be progressively reduced until it is kept dry throughout the winter. The folded structure of the crest requires particularly effective drainage to avoid moisture accumulation.
🌸 Flowering
The normal form produces small magenta or fuchsia flowers, which in the crested form may appear irregularly along the edges and folds of the crest, rather than forming a perfectly regular crown. Flowering occurs mainly during the warm season.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
