🌱 Morphology
A small, slow-growing Mammillaria, generally solitary in nature, although it may produce numerous basal offsets in cultivation. The stem is globose and may become short-cylindrical with age, 5–7 cm in height and 4–8 cm in diameter. The axils of the tubercles are covered in white wool. It develops 16–22 white, very fine radial spines, 1–2 mm long, and 2–4 central spines that are white with brown tips, up to 1–2 cm long. Mature specimens may acquire a columnar shape or even exhibit dichotomous branching.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to Mexico and is known mainly from the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, in Oaxaca, with populations near the border with Puebla. It grows between approximately 700 and 1,200 m, in xerophilous scrubland and tropical deciduous forest, frequently associated with limestone terrain.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −5 ºC, for short periods and provided the substrate is kept completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
Very abundant lighting is recommended, from full sun to light afternoon shade in very intense climates. To maintain compact growth and encourage flowering, a DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water moderately and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, water intake is progressively reduced, and it is kept dry during winter. Its sensitivity to excess moisture makes a highly draining substrate especially important.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms mainly in late winter and early spring, approximately between December and March in its natural range. It produces carmine-pink flowers of 1.2–1.4 cm, which form a small crown around the apex. The fruits are small and carmine-colored.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
