Kadenicarpus pseudomacrochele subsp. minimus (Gerhart Frank) Vázquez-Sánchez
🌱 Morphology
One of the smallest and most unique forms of the Kadenicarpus pseudomacrochele complex. It develops tiny stems, initially globose and subsequently somewhat elongated, barely 2–4 cm, seated on a thick napiform root and connected to it by a relatively flexible neck. It can branch profusely from the base and form small clumps. Adult plants feature thin, flexible, and tortuous spines, generally whitish to light brown, while young offsets may retain short, appressed spines for a long time. The top of the stem is usually covered in white wool.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, where it grows in arid environments and xerophilous scrublands, generally associated with mineral soils and rocky outcrops. Like the other forms of the complex, it has a marked adaptation to drought through its napiform root. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, subfamily Cactoideae, and tribe Cacteae. In Joël Lodé's taxonomy, it is retained in Kadenicarpus.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. In winter, it should be especially protected from persistent humidity, which is much more dangerous than dry cold.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. High radiation keeps the stems compact and promotes the formation of its characteristic spination. As a reference during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During winter, it should remain practically dry. In spring and summer, growth resumes, and it is recommended to water abundantly but infrequently, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. Its napiform root demands excellent drainage and does not tolerate waterlogging.
🌸 Flowering
It produces numerous small flowers, approximately 1.5–1.8 cm in diameter, of a greenish-yellow to pale yellow color, which appear in the apical zone. Flowering can be abundant during the warm period. The fruits are small and dry upon ripening.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
