Haworthia truncata f. variegata | Haworthia green and ivory fan
€47,70
🌱 Morphology
A variegated... Slow-growing succulent with a very distinctive architecture, with thick leaves arranged in two opposite rows that form a fan, rather than a circular rosette. The leaves are broad, fleshy, and grey-green, with abruptly truncated ends and flat or slightly wavy terminal surfaces, translucent and decorated with lines and dots. The variegation adds longitudinal bands of white, cream yellow, and green, which may extend irregularly from the base to the leaf windows. Some specimens show coppery or brownish-green hues. Each leaf has a distinct pattern, so the plant looks like a composition of small mineral stained-glass windows. It may remain solitary for years or produce offsets, depending on the clone.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
The variegated form is horticultural in origin and has no native wild locality. The species Haworthia truncata comes from the Little Karoo in the Western Cape, South Africa, especially from the surroundings of Oudtshoorn, Volmoed, Dysselsdorp, and Calitzdorp. In the wild, it grows in stony ground, partially buried and often protected by small shrubs. Contractile roots help sink the plant into the soil, while the leaf windows allow it to capture light with reduced exposure of the tissues to the dry environment.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
Tolerates minimum temperatures of up to 0 °C for short periods and with dry substrate. It is advisable to protect it from prolonged frosts and damp cold.
☀️ Lighting
Needs abundant filtered light or bright partial shade. The white and yellow areas contain less chlorophyll and are more sensitive to burning, so sudden intense sun should be avoided. A guideline PAR DLI of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ allows for compact growth without subjecting the plant to excessive radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its growth is usually more active during the cooler seasons. In autumn, winter, and spring, it is recommended to water thoroughly and let the substrate dry before the next watering. During the summer, reduce watering as temperatures rise and maintain good ventilation. Plants with very extensive variegation may grow more slowly due to their smaller photosynthetic surface.
🌸 Flowering
Produces a slender, elongated inflorescence with small whitish or pale green flowers marked by brown lines. Flowering is inconspicuous, and the main ornamental interest lies in the geometry of the truncated leaves and the contrast between the green areas and the variegated areas.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of bioavailable potassium and calcium. Apply with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
