🌱 Morphology
Succulent forming compact rosettes of fleshy, broad, and translucent leaves in shades of light green to bluish-green. The leaves widen toward the tip and end in rounded leaf windows, which allow light to enter the internal tissues. The surface may show fine lines and delicate patterns, while the margins are typically translucent and softly denticulate. In intense light, the leaves may take on pinkish or reddish hues. Its appearance resembles a cluster of small glass beads arranged in a rosette.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
Originally described as Haworthia gordoniana by Karl von Poellnitz in 1937, this plant is treated in Bruce Bayer's classification as Haworthia cooperi var. gordoniana. However, it regained species status in 2016. It is distributed in the Cape region of South Africa. Haworthia of the gordoniana group grow in stony soils and among grasses or low vegetation, where they remain partially protected from direct solar radiation. Their translucent leaves are an adaptation to life at ground level and to filtered light.
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is sensitive to frost and cold accompanied by humidity. It is recommended to keep it above -1 °C, especially if the substrate is not completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
Abundant filtered light or bright partial shade. An approximate DLI PAR of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and preserves the transparency of the leaves. Intense sun can cause sunburn and excessive reddish coloration.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It grows when temperatures, light, and available moisture are favorable. It is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry before watering again. During extreme heat or periods of dormancy, it is advisable to space out waterings and avoid waterlogging.
🌸 Flowering
Produces an elongated inflorescence with small, whitish, tubular-shaped flowers with greenish lines. Its main ornamental appeal lies in the translucent leaves and the geometry of the rosette.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. Apply with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during periods of rest or inactivity.
