Gymnocalycium anisitsii var. damsii variegated | Variegated ruby mosaic
€37,10
🌱 Morphology
A spontaneous variegated form of Gymnocalycium anisitsii subsp. damsii, with a globose to slightly depressed body, green to brownish-green, with broad and gently notched ribs. It produces small, whitish radial spines and can easily form offsets. Its extraordinary feature is the spontaneous variegation of the epidermis, which appears in yellow, cream, pink, red, purple, and green sectors, spots, stripes, or irregular patterns. Each clone can develop a different pattern, so no two specimens are necessarily the same. In some individuals, the pattern remains stable; in others, it may change with growth or even produce completely green tissue.
🧬 Variegation born by chance
Unlike selections like ‘Colorful Butterfly’, where the goal is to preserve a specific pattern, in this form the distribution of variegated tissue appears spontaneously. The ratio between green tissue and tissue with a lower chlorophyll content determines the intensity and extent of the colors. Specimens with sufficient green surface can live perfectly on their own roots; individuals with an extreme reduction in chlorophyll may require grafting.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
This is an exclusively horticultural form. The reference taxon comes from Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil, while f. variegata does not correspond to any known natural population. The old name Gymnocalycium damsii f. variegata is still used in collections, but it is currently classified within G. anisitsii subsp. damsii.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cereeae · Genus Gymnocalycium · Species Gymnocalycium anisitsii (K.Schum.) Britton & Rose · Subspecies subsp. damsii (K.Schum.) G.J.Charles · Form variegata.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC for short periods, provided the substrate is completely dry. In variegated forms, it is recommended to take extreme precautions with cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Bright partial shade is recommended, avoiding intense direct sunlight during the central hours of summer. An approximate DLI PAR of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ allows for maintaining compact growth and good color expression.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the plant is kept dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It is a generously flowering Gymnocalycium, with white, pinkish-white, or pink flowers that can appear repeatedly during the growing season. In mature specimens, the flowers emerge from the apical zone. No sufficiently reliable data has been found regarding the exact age of first flowering for this variegated form.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
