🌱 Morphology
Perennial succulent, compact to caespitose, which can reach about 10 cm in height. It forms short, branched stems, initially with 3–5 branches and later more numerous. The leaves are very fleshy, flat, elongated, and tongue- or ribbon-shaped, bright green in color, with rounded apices and smooth margins. They are arranged in two opposite rows (distichous) and can grow upright or rest on the ground. The fruits remain for a long time on persistent peduncles.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Species native to the South African provinces of Western and Eastern Cape, from Ceres and the Overberg to the Little Karoo and the Eastern Cape. It grows mainly under bushes in karroid scrubland, on sandy-loam soils. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family and is classified by SANBI as Least Concern (LC).
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −7 ºC in dry conditions.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light. During growth, it can be grown in full sun or in very bright partial shade, ensuring availability of more than 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Intense lighting promotes compact growth and good flowering.
🌸 Flowering
It produces solitary, yellow, daisy-like flowers, held by peduncles. Flowering occurs mainly between October and December.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Although it shows a marked adaptation to dry periods, its activity can respond to rainfall and favorable temperatures, so it is not appropriate to impose a rigid schedule. During growth periods, provide abundant watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next application. During periods of extreme heat or when the plant remains inactive, reduce watering significantly, resuming it when clear signs of growth appear.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
