Gasteria baylissiana f. variegata | Suurberg mosaic Gasteria

🌱 Morphology
A tiny, almost mineral-like gem. This variegated form of Gasteria baylissiana retains the species' compact habit but replaces part of the uniform green with a combination of silvery-green, white, and dark green tones, forming streaks, spots, and irregular patterns. The leaves are fleshy, strap-shaped, erect or slightly spreading, with the characteristic relief of small white tubercles that gives the species its rough appearance. It forms offsets from the base and can create compact colonies. Variegation is a vegetative characteristic, so it is preserved through clonal propagation.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, section Gasteria, series Gasteria. The species originates exclusively from the Eastern Cape province, in the Suurberg mountain range, where it grows in crevices of quartzitic sandstone rock faces, generally in light shade. It is an extremely localized species, known from a single gorge, so the origin of the species should not be confused with the horticultural origin of this variegated form.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to approximately −4 °C, although the specific resistance of a variegated form may be slightly lower than that of the completely green species. It is recommended to protect it from severe frost and, especially, from prolonged cold humidity. The wild species comes from an environment where plants grow protected among rocks and in light shade.
☀️ Lighting
Bright shade to semi-shade, avoiding strong sun during midday hours. Variegation reduces the amount of photosynthetically active green tissue, so abundant but progressive lighting is recommended. As a cultivation reference, 10–20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is suitable.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It does not have a marked summer dormancy: it can remain active for a good part of the year if it has adequate temperatures. SANBI indicates that G. baylissiana can be watered throughout the year, reducing the supply in winter and providing deep watering during prolonged hot and dry periods. It is recommended to let the substrate dry partially between waterings and avoid waterlogging.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering appears mainly in spring and can extend into the summer. The inflorescences are racemose and produce the characteristic pendulous flowers, bulbous at the base, typical of Gasteria, in shades of pinkish-red, orange, and green. In the species, the flowers reach approximately 14–16 mm and are attractive to nectarivorous birds.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during the summer dormancy.
