🌱 Morphology
Hybrids with a generally globose to short columnar growth habit, capable of forming numerous basal offsets and large clusters over the years. The body usually retains part of the robust appearance of Echinopsis oxygona, while the influence of Lobivia can contribute more compact stems, abundant sprouting, and extraordinary floral diversity. The ribs are pronounced and the areoles can present spines of highly variable length and density. This is a very diverse horticultural group in which several generations of Echinopsis, Lobivia, and other related taxa may be involved.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It has no natural distribution: these are hybrids obtained in cultivation from closely related South American cacti. Hybridization between Echinopsis and Lobivia has been practiced for many decades and has given rise to an enormous diversity of cultivars, some of them with complex or partially unknown genealogies. It belongs to the family Cactaceae, subfamily Cactoideae, tribe Trichocereeae.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −9 ºC when dry and properly acclimatized. The specific resistance may vary depending on the parents used. During periods of intense cold, it is recommended to keep the substrate completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
It needs very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun to maintain compact growth and promote abundant flowering. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended. Insufficient radiation can produce elongated stems and reduce flowering intensity.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the substrate is kept dry throughout the winter. In spring and summer, water abundantly once the substrate has dried out completely. During the formation of flower buds, it is advisable to maintain good lighting and avoid sudden changes in humidity.
🌸 Flowering
This is one of the great attractions of these hybrids. The flowers appear laterally and can reach 10–20 cm, depending on the genetic combination. There is an extraordinary range of colors: white, yellow, cream, orange, red, pink, magenta, violet, and numerous combinations, gradients, and contrasting throats. The shape can vary from open and star-shaped flowers to more bell-shaped corollas, with smooth, wavy, or overlapping petals. Hybrid selection has specifically sought to expand the size, intensity, and chromatic diversity of the flowers.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
