🌱 Morphology
A cactus with a very distinctive habit, featuring numerous slender stems that are initially erect but later become trailing or climbing, leaning on surrounding vegetation. The stems are cylindrical, firm, dark bluish-green, and can reach approximately 60–130 cm in length and 0.6–2 cm in diameter. They have 8–10 low, poorly defined ribs with closely spaced areoles. Each areole typically produces 8–16 short, whitish or grayish radial spines and 1–3 central spines, usually dark and appressed, up to 9 mm long. Below ground, it develops a highly thickened tuberous root, similar to that of a dahlia, which serves as a storage organ.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Its natural distribution extends from southern Texas to northeastern Mexico, mainly in Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and Coahuila. It inhabits dry scrublands and shrub formations, where its stems lean or climb among other plants to reach the light. It is a species adapted to drought periods thanks to its tuberous root. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a–11b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC in specimens that are dry and properly acclimated. During cold spells, it must remain completely dry, especially due to the presence of the tuberous root and its natural adaptation to warm environments.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires high lighting, with an approximate goal of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It tolerates several hours of direct sun, although the stems may benefit from some protection during the hours of maximum summer insolation. Good light intensity promotes firm growth and abundant flowering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During winter, it should be kept cool, bright, and completely dry. As temperatures rise, stem growth begins, occurring mainly during spring and summer. During this period, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. Excellent drainage is especially important to prevent damage to the tuberous root. During dormancy, it may lose turgidity and progressively use the reserves stored in the tuber.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers generally appear near the end of the stems and are large in relation to their diameter. They are funnel-shaped and range in color from pink to deep magenta pink, with darker central bands; they reach approximately 6–7 cm in diameter. In Madrid, they can be expected primarily between May and July.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
