🌱 Morphology
Small, cespitose and very spiny cactus, capable of forming large clusters of over 100 stems. The stems are cylindrical, green, about 6–8 cm long and up to 3 cm in diameter, branching profusely from the base. It has 9–10 low, flat ribs. The areoles produce 3–4 central spines, rounded in cross-section, 1–2.5 cm long, initially cream or yellowish and later grayish, and 12–15 straight radial spines, 5–15 mm long, of the same color. The abundance of light-colored spines gives the plant a characteristic whitish appearance.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to northwestern Mexico, mainly in Sonora, in the El Novillo and Sierra de Mazatán area, with a possible presence in nearby areas of Chihuahua. It is found at altitudes between approximately 300 and 500 m, growing on wooded hillsides, among oak forests and in cavities of granitic substrates with humus accumulation, as well as on gneiss. Its known area is very restricted. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 8b–11b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −9 ºC in dry conditions and with properly acclimatized specimens. Cold resistance is conditioned by the state of hydration, drainage, and the duration of low temperatures.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires intense lighting, with an approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It tolerates and requires several hours of direct sun. High lighting is especially favorable for the formation of dense, compact spination.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the winter, it should be kept cool, bright, and completely dry. Growth is concentrated mainly from spring to late summer. With high temperatures, abundant watering is recommended, letting the substrate dry completely before watering again. It is sensitive to excess moisture and requires excellent drainage.
🌸 Flowering
Produces short, tubular flowers, red to orange-red in color, with a lighter throat, up to 5–7 cm long and about 5 cm in diameter. In Madrid, flowering can be expected approximately between May and July, depending on growing conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
