🌱 Morphology
A compact-growing, generally solitary species that develops rosettes approximately 10–20 cm in diameter. Its leaves are very fleshy and elongated, with an elliptical to oblanceolate shape, a pointed tip, and a small, distinct terminal point. They measure approximately 5–9 cm long and range in color from dark green to yellowish green, sometimes with lavender or purplish hues. The bloom covering the young leaves gives them a matte, slightly whitish finish. Their appearance recalls that of some Pachyphytum, due to the thickness and texture of the leaves.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A Mexican botanical species described by Eizi Matuda in 1958. Its type locality is the Barranca de Tolimán, in Hidalgo, at an elevation of about 1,900–2,000 m. It is also known in Querétaro, where it grows in dry environments and on rocky outcrops. Some sources extend its range to Tamaulipas, although the taxonomic databases consulted do not agree on this point. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family, series Urbiniae, according to the specialist revision consulted.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b: −3.9 °C. This figure indicates the lower climatic limit of the USDA zone, not a minimum temperature guaranteed for the species. Although it lives at high elevations, it should not be assumed to tolerate severe frost, especially in humid conditions. Protect it from frost and keep the substrate dry during cold periods.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with a suggested reference of DLI PAR 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant light encourages compact growth and brings out the nuances of the leaf bloom and coloration. Gradually acclimate it to direct sunlight to prevent sunburn.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Water thoroughly during the growing season and allow the substrate to dry before watering again. Water much less in winter, especially in low temperatures. Due to its rocky habitat and succulent leaves, it needs a very free-draining substrate and does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.
🌸 Flowering
It produces ascending lateral inflorescences, with flower stalks about 20–25 cm long. The flowers are tubular or shaped like small urns, with a coral-colored base and orange or yellow tips. Flowering has been recorded in populations in central Mexico from spring to summer, approximately March through July. There is not enough reliable data to determine the age at first flowering or confirm self-fertility and repeat flowering in several flushes within a single season.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, we recommend Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Bloom. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
