Echeveria 'Romeo' | The Blood Rose

🌱 Morphology
Horticultural selection of Echeveria agavoides, characterized by extraordinarily intense coloration. It forms a compact, generally solitary rosette up to about 15–20 cm in diameter, with very fleshy, rigid, triangular-ovate leaves ending in a sharp, hard tip. Unlike the species, whose leaves are usually green with only reddish margins and tips, in ‘Romeo’ practically the entire leaf blade can take on shades of dark red, burgundy, purplish red, or purple gray, especially in bright light and with temperature fluctuations. The surface is smooth and waxy in appearance. It may produce a few offsets as it matures.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae · Echeveria agavoides (Urbiniae series).
‘Romeo’ has no natural range of its own: it is a horticultural selection of Echeveria agavoides, a species native to northeastern and southwestern Mexico, where it grows in dry, sunny environments. The species is characterized by its rigid, triangular, agave-like leaves and urceolate flowers, features that historically justified its inclusion in Urbinia and are now retained at the series level within Echeveria.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9a. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC for short periods if the substrate remains dry. Cold combined with moisture considerably increases the risk of basal rot, a problem particularly noted in the E. agavoides group.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with an approximate PAR DLI of 20–30 mol/m²/day. Bright light is essential for achieving ‘Romeo’s’ characteristic red-purple coloration; in low light, the leaves may remain much greener and the rosette may lose its compact form.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. Water much less frequently in winter. With this selection, it is especially important to avoid persistent moisture around the base of the rosette.
🌸 Flowering
It flowers mainly in spring and early summer. The arching flower stalks, up to about 30 cm long, produce bell-shaped red or pink flowers with yellow tips. They are somewhat smaller than those of some other E. agavoides selections.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, we recommend Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
