🌱 Morphology
A horticultural selection of the extraordinary Echeveria purpusorum, commercially known as ‘Red’ or Red form. It forms small, generally solitary rosettes about 6–8 cm in diameter, although they can grow larger over the years. Its leaves are thick, triangular and pointed, olive green, gray-green or dark green, and covered with characteristic irregular burgundy red or reddish-brown speckles. In this selection, the red coloration can become especially intense in bright light and cool temperatures, creating the effect of a small rosette speckled with fire. This is a slow-growing plant.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Crassulaceae family · Urceolatae series. The species is endemic to Mexico and is found in Puebla and Oaxaca, in the Sierra Mixteca region. It grows on rocky outcrops, especially basaltic ones, in dry, well-drained areas, often sheltered by other plants or rocks. Populations have been documented at elevations of approximately 1,500–2,100 m.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9a. It tolerates minimum temperatures as low as −6 ºC in dry conditions and for brief periods. For a collector’s plant, it is preferable to protect it from prolonged frost and, above all, from cold combined with moisture.
☀️ Lighting
Partial shade, with a recommended PAR DLI of 15–25 mol/m²/day. In its habitat, it may grow sheltered by vegetation and rocks, though bright but not scorching light encourages a compact rosette and the development of reddish hues.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Most growth occurs during the rainy season, while activity decreases considerably during the dry season. Water thoroughly during active growth and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, water much less frequently, keeping the substrate almost completely dry.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering occurs mainly between late spring and summer, although flowering from December to February has been recorded in its habitat, depending on the population and conditions. The flower stalks bear pentamerous flowers that are pink to orange-red, with yellow tips and yellow interiors. Mature plants can produce up to about 13 flowers per stalk.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growing season, we recommend Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Bloom. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
This is an incomparable xerophyte, grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and in substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
