🌱 Morphology
It forms compact and symmetrical rosettes approximately 10–15 cm in diameter, which may produce offsets with age and form clusters. Its fleshy, spatulate leaves, ending in a fine tip, have a glaucous green or grayish-green surface, traced by a characteristic intense red margin. This crimson line is particularly marked in abundant light and gives each leaf a very defined profile.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
A botanical species native to Mexico, found in the states of Hidalgo, Puebla and Veracruz. It grows in dry environments and xeric scrublands, associated with well-drained sites and balanced soils. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family and has been classified in the Urceolatae series.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b: −3.9 °C. This value expresses the lower climatic limit of the zone, not a guarantee of the species' resistance. Although it can tolerate brief drops in temperature in dry conditions with excellent drainage, it is sensitive to prolonged frosts and the combination of cold and humidity. It is recommended to protect it when frost is forecast.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with a reference guide of DLI PAR 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Intense lighting promotes compact growth and red coloration of the margin. It is recommended to acclimatize it gradually to direct sun, especially after periods of protected cultivation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It may grow during periods of favorable conditions, especially in spring and autumn. It is recommended to water thoroughly and wait for the substrate to dry out before watering again. During periods of cold or extreme heat, water intake is reduced, avoiding waterlogging and persistent humidity in the rosette.
🌸 Flowering
It produces arched floral stems that rise above the leaves, with hanging, bell-shaped or urn-shaped bright yellow flowers. Flowering usually occurs in spring and summer, depending on cultivation conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
