🌱 Morphology
A perennial succulent that can develop a rosette up to about 12 cm in diameter, supported by a bare, fleshy, and characteristically knobby stem that can reach approximately 20 cm in height and branch with age. Under favorable conditions, it can form small clusters of rosettes.
The leaves are thick, fleshy, and spatulate to obovate, densely clustered at the ends of the stems. They have a green hue, often slightly glaucous, crossed by dark red or purple lines that run along the central nerve and the margins. The intensity of these markings increases with high lighting.
The species is remarkably variable. There are almost sessile forms and others with well-developed stems, as well as specimens with completely green leaves or with varying degrees of reddish pigmentation. The epithet nodulosa, which means "provided with nodules," refers precisely to the bulging and knobby appearance of its stems.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae · Series Nudae of the genus Echeveria.
It is a species from southern Mexico, widely distributed and relatively common in Oaxaca and southern Puebla. It grows in dry environments and xerophilous scrubland, where rapid drainage and drought periods condition its growth. Populations are known at approximately 1,800–1,900 m of altitude in Oaxaca.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to approximately −6.7 ºC briefly when completely dry and protected from humidity. Some cultivation references are more conservative and place its resistance around −4 ºC, so cold combined with wet substrate should be avoided.
During winter, it is advisable to keep it protected from persistent rain and prolonged frosts. The combination of cold, humidity, and poor ventilation significantly increases the risk of stem and root rot.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Indicative PAR DLI: 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Very high lighting promotes the compact development of the rosettes and, especially, the appearance of the characteristic red and purple lines on the leaves. The species is considered suitable for full sun, although plants grown under protection must be progressively acclimated before receiving direct solar radiation.
In the extremely hot summers of Madrid, it may be advisable to provide light protection during the central hours, while maintaining high daily lighting. With insufficient light, the stems elongate, the rosettes separate, and the reddish markings lose intensity.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. In Spain, it concentrates its growth during the temperate seasons and considerably reduces its activity during the winter. Winter cultivation should be kept much drier, coinciding with the reduction in temperature and photoperiod. The RHS recommends keeping it almost dry during the winter.
During the active growth period, it is recommended to perform a heavy watering and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. Water should be prevented from being retained between the leaves or around the crown.
During extreme heat episodes, if a slowdown in growth is observed, watering should be spaced out. In autumn, they will be gradually reduced, and during winter dormancy, the substrate should be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
It produces flower stalks of about 15–23 cm, which clearly stand out from the rosette. The flowers appear in lax racemes, with several flowers per inflorescence. The corolla has a markedly pentagonal shape, straw yellow to pale yellow, tinged with red, while pinkish or reddish flowers on the exterior are also described in cultivation.
Flowering occurs mainly during the summer, although it may vary depending on temperature, photoperiod, and cultivation conditions. The flowers rise above the foliage, creating a very striking contrast with the leaves with reddish margins and central nerve.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
